Trade Winds Pillow by Amy Friend

We love the modern lines + the bold and neutral colors of Amy Friend’s Improv collection. Released in partner with Benartex/Comtempo at International Quilt Market this past Spring, Improv was Amy’s debut collection and she hit it out of the park. She has been posting inspiring projects showcasing both the fabric and the thread all year and we love each new one more than the last.

If you’d like to learn more about the collection, don’t miss our Summer announcement. If you’re interested in purchasing Amy’s fabrics or her coordinating Aurifil thread collection, please check in with your local quilt shop.

We’re so thrilled to have Amy as a guest here on Auribuzz today. She is sharing a brand new FREE project, perfect to stitch up as a holiday gift for a loved one. Thank you, Amy!!

I wanted to design a simple project that showed off this bow print from my Improv fabric collection.  I drafted a simple paper pieced template and used my Wafer lightbox to position the fabric just so within each triangle so each triangle was identical. I love little details like this in an otherwise simple project!

I quilted the pillow with lines that echo the center row of triangles but extend to the outer edges of the pillow, about a half inch apart.  Within the triangles, I quilted more densely.  The directionality of the triangles in this project suggest wind to me so I am calling this pillow Trade Winds.

This pillow is a great project to accompany my Paper Trail quilt.  The pattern for the quilt can be found in my book, Improv Paper Piecing.

Of course both projects are pieced and quilted with Aurifil 50 weight thread from my designer collection.

I hope you enjoy this free pattern!

color-wheel-2.png

This year we are celebrating the rainbow of colors in our color wheel. Each designer is assigned a color to create their block in.

This month we land on Green. Each month it’s a wonderful surprise to see how the designer was inspired by their color on the colorwheel.

I’m a huge fan of Heather’s work. She has vibrant work and super clever designs!

I interviewed Heather and you can listen to that at my website

This year we challenged each designer by giving them a color on the color wheel. I asked for a photo to use in the collage so we can see how each one worked.  In January I’ll have a setting to pull them all together!

Garnet Pillow Cover by Amy Friend

We are absolutely smitten with Amy Friend of During Quiet Time‘s debut collection with Contempo/Benartex. Improv was released at International Quilt Market this past Spring and we’ve been keeping a close eye on Amy’s social media ever since, ooh-ing and aah-ing at every new project. If you’re interested in purchasing Amy’s fabrics or her coordinating Aurifil thread collection, please check in with your local quilt shop.

We’re so thrilled to have Amy as a guest here on Auribuzz today. She is sharing a brand new project using some of our favorite fabrics & threads from her Improv collections. Thank you, Amy!!

I hope you enjoy this free pillow cover project that I have designed for you!  I am calling it Garnet and it finishes at 16″. This project is foundation pieced but suitable for someone with only a little paper piecing experience.  It’s not too difficult!  You will be enjoying it on your couch in no time.

—————————————–

When I designed my Improv fabric collection for Contempo (a division of Benartex), I wanted to include a gradient in prints. I love using gradients in my work and it is challenging to pull a good gradient together. As you can see, the grays in this collection provide you with a ready to go gradient, softened by the simple, modern prints.  The shades of rose and wine give it a pop of color.

I love using Aurifil 50 weight thread for my paper piecing because it is fine and doesn’t add to the bulk of the seams. I also use it for quilting because it blends in and lets my piecing take center stage.  In my Improv Designer Collection, I chose a gradient of grays to coordinate with my prints and used them to quilt this pillow, along with the two shades of rose.

I hope you will enjoy this project! If you do an you’d like to keep going, the pillow coordinates well with Caged, a quilt pattern I released earlier this year. It is pictured in the feature images above and can also be seen below. The pattern is available here on my website.

Thank you and have fun!

Sariella’s Butterfly Charm Blocks

Is there any better way to kick off a weekend of creativity than with a brand new pattern? Certainly not! Enter the FREE Butterfly Charm Block pattern by Sariella — the super power design team of Nicole Young of Lillyella and Sarah Thomas of Sariditty.

The Butterfly Charm Block originated as a set of paper-piecing patterns that Nicole created, as shown here and below. Cricket, Gidget, and Pepper burst onto the scene in 2015 in a flurry of loveliness, fully representing Nicole’s signature style.

This new pattern release is the Sariella-ized version of these blocks — in other words, 3 new versions of the original butterflies all done up in Sarah’s signature style. Meet Cleo, Ginger, and Peggy!

We just love that these stunning butterflies can now be paper-pieced OR appliqued. Think of the possibilities — a full quilt, a wall hanging, or maybe even a dress or skirt? Or how about a handbag? Nicole incorporated all 6 blocks into her Sewing Date Traveler Bag, a free pattern from Robert Kaufman (available here). She used her original butterfly charm blocks on one pocket…

and the new applique versions on the other side.

The featured fabrics are True Colors by Tula Pink for Free Spirit Fabrics and the threads are from Sariella’s debut Aurifil thread collection. Perfection!

Choose Happiness

Enchanted, Dodi Poulsen of Two Sisters at Squirrel Hollow‘s debut collection for Aurifil, released at Houston Quilt Market last year. The colors were hand-picked to coordinate with the magical prints in her collection with Riley Blake Designs.  A lovely showcase of navy, pink, mint, and teal with a little pop of yellow & green, the collection brings to mind fairytales of our youth.

While her collections boast an array of our 50wt thread, Dodi has been experimenting with our Aurifloss in her Enchanted colors.

She has thoroughly enjoyed working with the floss and was kind enough to put together this lovely pattern to share with all of you:

Choose Happiness is a delightfully sweet embroidery pattern featuring a tiny squirrel among the flowers. It’s completely darling and would look perfect as a finished hoop, as Dodi did here, or finished as a wall hanging, embellishment on a tote, or even on a throw pillow.

To grab your copy of this free pattern, simply click on the link below. Print the page at 100% and use your preferred method to transfer the pattern to your fabric for easy stitching. For some great tips, check out Dodi’s blog.
