2017 Spring Quilt Market, Part 2

Windham Fabrics: Natalie Barnes, Felice Regina, Amy Gibson, Crystal Nilpirom

One of the things that we love most about International Quilt Market is having the chance to check in with Aurifil Designers and Industry Partners. We are a diverse community, spread across the globe, which makes regular opportunities to meet in person an absolute delight. Our Creative Director, Erin Sampson, spends much of Market running between partner booths, capturing booth tours, staging informal interviews, and checking in on our new collection releases. It’s exciting and inspiring and thanks to excellent social tools like Facebook Live, we’re able to share the experience with all of you. In fact, we had so many tours this time around that we’ll split them into two posts;).

Our only regret is that we don’t always get to make it to see everyone, so there are a few missing from our tour. Keep an eye on the blog throughout the Summer for another introduction to ALL of our new designers and collections!

WINDHAM FABRICS
Windham Fabrics had a lovely lineup of booths, each boasting countless projects, with everything from collaborative stitching projects, to cats, to Spring Gardens.  Natalie Barnes, Amy Gibson, and Sarah Fielke had new Aurifil collections presenting, but we also had a chance to check out the booths for Annabel Wrigley, Felice Regina, and Janine Vangool.

MODA FABRICS
We were so excited to have a chance visit with a few of our beloved Moda designers! Stacy Iest Hsu, Joanna Figueroa, and Basic Grey had new Aurifil collections presenting, but we also got to say hi to Jane Davidson of Franny & Jane, Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life, Corey Yoder, and Shannon Gillman Orr.

ANDOVER FABRICS
We toured the booth with Giuseppe Ribaudo, our amazing main man at Andover, stopping to say hello to Alison Glass and Edyta Sitar while also checking out collections and projects for Di Ford-Hall and Kim Schaefer.

ART GALLERY FABRICS
Art Gallery Fabrics Ambassador Mathew Boudreaux of Mister Domestic took us on a grand booth tour, showcasing his in-booth charity stitching, highlighting new collections, and saying hello to designers along the way!

RILEY BLAKE
We started our tour at Riley Blake with Christopher Thompson of The Tattooed Quilter who has collections presenting in August and September. We also took a peek at the new collections by Lori Holt — a new 45-spool box — in addition to a range of other Riley Blake designers.

MICHAEL MILLER FABRICS
Kait Witte of Michael Miller led us on a tour of the Michael Miller booths, featuring Tamara Kate, Sarah Jane, Sandra Clemons, and Susan Emory.

We’ll finish up our Quilt Market recap with some final tours and intros on Tuesday! Happy Sunday all! 🙂

Aurifil Shenanigans

Who says Market has to be all work and no play? Are you ready to have some fun? If you’re attending International Quilt Market this weekend in St. Louis, we hope you’ll join in on the Aurifil Shenanigans. We’ve teamed up with 13 amazing companies offering some of the best fabrics, books, machinery, & tools in the industry. We’ve placed one extra large cone of Aurifil thread in each of their booths (in addition to our own!). Each cone is labeled with a color number. Entry cards are available in our booth (#1109/1110) and in each of our partner booths.

[If you are not attending Market, have no fear! We’ve got a prize for all of your at-home shenanigans as well! Scroll to the end of this post for details.]

Your mission, should you choose to accept it?
Find 8 of the 14 cones! For each cone found, list the booth in which it was discovered + the color number on the entry card… AND if you’re feeling super sassy, take a selfie or some sort of fun image of the cone and post it to Instagram OR Facebook tagging #aurifilshenanigans + @aurifilthread + the booth in which the spool was found. We want to see your silly (and fabulous) faces!!

The reward?
We’ve got not one… not two… but FOURTEEN fabulous prizes to give away, one for each of our partners. Feast your eyes on the prizes below.

THE INTERVIEW
How did the idea to develop a line of specialty denim fabrics first come about?

Denim is the quintessential American fabric. It’s an amazing substrate and was long neglected in our industry. At AGF, we always thought that denim had great potential and we wanted to launch a trendy line to be used in garment sewing but at the same time that could be brought into play for quilting. Quilting with denim is very fun!

Tell us a bit about the different types of denim available with this collection.
We have several types, which are different in texture and weight:

SMOOTH SOLIDS are the classic denim that are very thin and have the same weight of quilting fabric.

TEXTURED SOLIDS are thicker and more structured for sturdy projects.

CROSSHATCH TEXTURED DENIM consists of a beautiful woven pattern.

OUTLAND YARN DYES are lightweight with an attractive denim look.

LOVEY DOBBY super soft and great for many projects, especially garments.

PREMIUM LINEN BLEND a blend of linen and cotton with a soft touch.

STREAKED BLEND for unique for out of the box projects.

DENIM PRINTS are the stars of the group. They are super soft and lightweight denim, ideal for sewing and quilting with many creative designs printed on them.

[editor’s note: visit the website for a closer look at all offerings]

What inspired the designs for the denim prints?
We really wanted the quilting community to start creating quilts with denim, so the idea of adding prints came as a no-brainer. Quilters can create a multitude of unique quilts with our variety of prints!

There is often a conception that denim is meant for apparel, but we’ve seen some incredibly inspiring non-apparel projects lately. What are your favorite non-apparel projects with these new fabrics?
Well, we have to admit that we love quilts, bed runners, totes, more totes, clutches and even toys just to name a few!

How were the threads for Ragged, the coordinating thread collection, selected?
We love the quality of Aurifil threads and they come in several materials and weights to help create many different techniques when sewn on denim. The colors coordinate perfectly and that makes them ideal for sewing and quilting with our types of denim.

The collection includes a wonderful variety of thread weights, including 40wt, 28wt, 12wt, Linen and Wool. What tips would you share with consumers for how to use the various weights in their projects?
There are not many tips we can recommend since Aurifil threads have the best quality, so you can use them at will!! They resist breakage extremely well, so they can be used in bobbin work, hand embroidery and stitching, high-speed machine quilting, topstitching, hand quilting, and sashiko as well. Imagine the possibilities!

What do you love most about Aurifil threads and how it partners with your fabrics?
We are incredibly honored to be partners with Aurifil! We share the same values and quality products are at the top of our lists. The color range is unbelievable and they come in every weight you can ask for. We love the luster and sheen of each of the cotton spools and how delicate the wool threads are. We even love how they barely produce lint which means that we have less lint to clean in our sewing machine hooks! What else can anyone ask for? Aurifil threads are perfection!

2015 Fall Quilt Market Part 2

Welcome back to 2015 Quilt Market Part 2!  There is never enough space to put the grandness of Quilt Market into one post.  Market needs to be at least two to three days longer ( and two posts longer) to be able to process at least half of what is happening or what has happened!  Hoping you enjoy Part 2 of Market!

QuiltMarket-2

There is never a lack of activities for shops at Market!  On the day prior to Market officially opening, there are Schoolhouses.  Schoolhouses are designed to educate and inspire shops to help their customers to find the right tools, fabrics and knowledge for every project!

Aurifil’s Schoolhouses were by different areas of the quilting industry. Fabric house, Island Batik, designers Wendy Sheppard and Jinny Beyer, and Alex Veronelli.

The first was Island Batik Fabrics with their lovely new collections! The one being shown is Tinsel!  Each of the four newest fabric collections has an Aurifil thread collection to match! Perfect colors for every one!

IMG_1365

Wendy Sheppard from Ivory Spring was the Second in the series.  Wendy is a scientist turned quilter.  She has been featured in just about every quilting magazine on the planet with her beautiful quilts that are all quilted on her domestic home machine!  Wendy has a new Aurifil Collection and explained how she came to use Aurifil 50wt and why she believes it is the perfect choice for all quilters for it’s strength and beauty!

IMG_1384

Wendy’s stunning quilt was on display in the Aurifil booth during Market and will be going on tour with Alex for his lectures in Aurifil Quilt Shops, Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this beauty!  Also, keep on the lookout for a possible pattern for this beauty!

IMG_1390

The talented Jinny Beyer was in the schoolhouse next!  Jinny’s insightful lecture was about thread weight uses.  With so many weights to choose from, how do you know what is the correct one for your project? Jinny shared what she uses and why.

IMG_1395

Alex assisted her by holding up one of her quilts as an example.

IMG_1400

Alex was the final lecture for the day.  The topic of his discussion was the overwhelmingly popular Aurifil lectures.  This lecture is available only to Aurifil shops. This exciting lecture is approximately 90 minutes of engaging video that takes you behind the scenes of the Aurifil factory, inside the research and development of the thread, a short lecture about the recommended uses and care for the threads, then concludes with an array of stunning artworks from the industries top designers.  Alex explained how the program works, why it is so popular and added in that there are gifts and giveaways of Aurifil at every session! What is not to love?

Schoolhouse lecture

Time to walk the Quilt Market floor!  It is always exciting to see the upcoming collections from the various designers and fabric houses!  It never ceases to be amazing that each booth is created only for the few days of the show. These displays are a labor of love a true act of passion by their creators!

Joanna Figueroa from Fig Tree &Co.  Is always prepared with something new and fresh for Moda Fabrics! She is really a sweetheart to boot!

IMG_1434

She had a little something unexpected and special in her booth…WOOL and Aurifil floss to match!  This is something completely new and will be coming to a shop near you soon!  Very thrilling!

IMG_1437

The new kid on the Moda block is artist, architect, and all around great dancer LUKE Haynes!  This is Luke’s first fabric collection.  It is appropriately named Dapper and has a modern edgy feel using traditional herringbone and bold colors.
