2017 Fall Quilt Market, Part 3

One of our favorites parts of International Quilt Market is having the opportunity to walk the aisles, visit with designers, industry partners, and friends. The booths are always breath-taking and the care and planning that goes into getting every detail right is always incredible. Our last Market post is a celebration of those booths! We hope you leave feeling as inspired as we did! 🙂

Andover‘s booth was full of vivid colors (Alison Glass & Libs Elliott) and vintage vibes (Edyta Sitar & Di Ford-Hall). We loved getting a peek at the gorgeous upcoming collections and were thrilled to launch two new Aurifil collections for Libs Elliott with Wild Side and Edyta Sitar with Crystal Farm.

Aurifil Designer Annie Smith was at Market with a gorgeous range of patterns (including Color Pop, shown here) in a delightful burst of Robert Kaufman Solids! She had her Aurifil collections — Love is Spoken Here, Summerset and Winterset — to coordinate.

We were just down the aisle from Camelot and had so much fun with their Star Wars display! They had some fabulous quilts, but what really stole the show were the appearances of Darth Vader, a Storm Trooper, and Chewbacca. We’ll admit that more than a few of us got videos with our childhood heroes and villains!!

Anna Maria‘s booth was as stunning as ever, filled with gorgeous florals and bright and bold colors. Her new collection, Sweet Dreams, is every bit as lovely as we would all expect and I know we’re already plotting what to make once we get these fabulous prints in hand. There were some gorgeous projects on display, with more than a few featuring threads from Anna Maria’s collections — Stitch Gallery, Warm Reception, and Cool & Collected.

Tula Pink‘s booth was a rainbow of wonder. We likely could have nestled into one of those chairs and just stayed there for the whole of Market. 😉 We loved her custom pillows, the stunning quilting on her color wheel quilt, and the beautiful parade of handbags.

Aurifil Designer McKenna Ryan is back with Hoffman Fabrics and we’re looking forward to working with her on a new collection for 2018. We were super excited to present two new collections for Fall — first, Me + You… a stunning Large box of 50wt thread to coordinate with your favorite Me + You Indah Batiks. We also debuted the new 2018 Hoffman Challenge box celebrating their 30th anniversary! Stay tuned for more info on the challenge in the next few weeks.

For Fall, we presented new Island Batik collections for Jackie Kunkel with Blue Moon and Ebony Love with Southern Blooms. We are so excited about these two colorways and have every confidence that you’ll all fall in love as quickly as we did:). We loved getting the full tour from Katie, giving us the opportunity to see all of the lovely batiks up close, including new collections for Aurifil Designers and friends Tammy Silvers, Nan Baker, & Cheri Good Designs.

Michael Miller presented something a little different for Fall Market and we’re already smitten. Project Dovetail is a collaborative collection featuring one new design in two different colorways from each of Michael Miller’s licensed designers. The collection was launched with a heartfelt charitable goal — learn more about that here. We are thrilled to have a coordinating thread box and are looking forward to working with all of the designers on some fun promotion in 2018!

Moda‘s booths always make us smile:). We didn’t get a ton of photos this time around, but we did do a fairly extensive tour! From new designers to those who have been established for quite some time, we had a blast giving a shout out to some of our favorites!

Moda Designer Jen Kingwell had a gorgeous booth, full of color. Her collection, Beach Road, draws inspiration from her home and in looking at it, we could be instantly whisked away to the Australian beaches. We were thrilled to present Jen’s debut Aurifil thread collection — 10 sweet small spools of her go-to 50wt thread.

Quiltmania launched the most spectacular subscription box. Featuring Andover and Aurifil designer Di Ford-Hall, the boxes features 6 individual drawers, each with a variety of must-haves, including fabric, thread, marking tools, piecing papers, and more. The boxes are limited edition, with only 400 available. We hear that these boxes have already sold out, so we’ll have to admire them from afar. ❤ To learn more, head here.

Oh how we love Riley Blake!! We had two new collections launching at Market — Jill Finley‘s Quilter’s Palette and Minki Kim‘s Dear Diary. The booths were full of gorgeous fabrics and projects, including the awesome wall of fries (yes, french fries!!) in Christopher Thompson‘s booth. Oh, how we love Market so!

We absolutely adore the team at Robert Kaufman! Once again, we got the grand tour from the illustrious Elisabeth Hardy. Did you know that our Robert Kaufman designers all have ‘Designer Palette’ thread collections? While each color may not necessarily be a perfect match with every fabric collection, the thread boxes represent the typical palette for each designer. It’s so absolutely fabulous because you can buy a Large box of Carolyn Friedlander‘s Favorites to stitch up projects using her Friedlander, Architextures, or even her new Manhattan fabrics. Perfection!

We were delighted to see Windham and Aurifil designer Sarah Fielke in Houston! Though her WordPlay collection officially launched at Spring Market, she had a wonderful showcase at Fall. Sarah was one of our first 80wt designers and we just love seeing all that she does with it! New Aurifil Designer Shayla Wolf of Sassafras Lane had a bold and brilliant booth full of color to launch her debut collection, Foundation. *swoon*

That’s all for now! Thank you so very much for following along with us. International Quilt Market was a wonderful whirlwind and we’re so grateful we got to be a part of it! Until next time!

Coming Up Roses: Penny in the City

Penny in the City by Kate Brennan

We were thrilled when the amazing team at Penny Rose Fabrics asked if we’d like to join in on Jill Finley‘s Coming Up Roses blog tour. You see, we love Jill. ❤ Not just because she is one of our treasured Aurifil Designers, but because she is an incredibly talented fabric designer, quilter, maker, and generally an all around lovely person. Also, Coming Up Roses, her latest line with Penny Rose, is absolutely stunning. Just look at these feature prints!!

While we don’t have a new thread collection to coordinate with Coming Up Roses, we were happy to see that some of the colors from her Meadow Sweets collection work incredibly well! Take a peek at those colors right here.

To feature Jill’s fabrics, we turned to Aurifil’s own Kate Brennan, based in our Chicago office. Kate is a talented quilter with a keen eye for color and pairing patterns. She focused on Jill’s blue colorway, opting for the Roses Main, Roses Vine, Roses Hexi, and Roses Buds prints and added in a few Riley Blake coordinates with Swiss Dot Tone on Tone White & Confetti Cottons Color Riley Royal Blue. Kate says that she loves working with Riley Blake fabrics and is particularly taken with this collection. It has a lot of flexibility, a good range of scale and color in patterns, featured saturated solids, and is super high quality.

She grabbed a spool of Aurifil 6735 (Plumtastic) in 50wt for piecing and quilting and added in a spool of 2783 (Medium Delft Blue) in 40wt for additional quilting.

While Kate did not use a pattern to make Penny in the City she did use a Mariner’s Compass Ruler from Robin Ruth Design. The ruler allowed her to achieve a stunning Mariner’s compass block by strip-piecing.

We are in LOVE with Kate’s finished wall hanging and had so much fun checking out her photos of the piece around the city of Chicago. 😉 (with a bit of added help from her daughters!)

Coming Up Roses will be available in stores soon!  Make sure to check out the fabulous free Simple Circles Quilt pattern by Andy Knowlton, shared last week and keep an eye on the blogs below for more great projects and patterns to come!

Spring Quilt Market, Part 3

Elisabeth and Nichole of Robert Kaufman

If only we could extend International Quilt Market by a day or two… but not for the business! We need extra time to catch up with friends and colleagues — time to check in, share a hug, ask about each other’s kids/dogs/new houses/travels/parents/etc. We all work so hard and move so fast, it’s easy for the personal to get lost and sometimes the personal, the bonds formed, relationships built, and connections made are what make the biggest difference. So, for all those who we missed… ’til next time;).

We do have a few final booths to share and hope you’ve had fun following along with us! For Houston, let us know if you have special requests, booths you’d like to see, tours you’d like to take… Let’s have some fun!!

We absolutely adore the team at Island Batik! We had a moment to visit with Elizabeth and Katie before Katie was kind enough to take us on a tour of the booth. New fabrics collections from Ebony Love, Jackie Kunkel, Tammy Silvers, Cheri Good Quilt Design and more!

Elisabeth and Nichole of Robert Kaufman fabrics took us on a fabulous tour of the RK booths, including giving us a sneak peek at their own new book, The Fussy Cut Sampler! Rebecca Bryan had a new collection presenting, as did Erin Dollar (though she didn’t have a booth this time), and we also got to visit with Darlene Zimmerman, Elizabeth Hartman, and Carolyn Friendlander and check out the booths for Valori Wells and Makenna Ryan.

We popped into Marcus to say hello to Aurifil Designers Victoria Findlay Wolfe, Nancy Rink, and Sarah Maxwell. The booths were rich with color and featured so many fabulous new patterns!

One of the biggest buzz collections of Spring Market was our trio of Limited Edition wooden boxes debuting Anna Maria Horner for Aurifil! We are so excited about these boxes that were designed to coordinate with Anna Maria’s Floral Retrospective collection and have some fun things coming up. Collections are shipping in August, so make sure to ask your local quilt shop to order yours. Anna Maria was lovely and inspiring, as always, and was kind enough to take us on the grand tour of her booth.

We were so excited to have a chance to say hello to Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson, co-authors and co-hosts of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along, which launched in 2016 as an online community sewing & quilting event and has now be released in book form, sparking a whole new wave of participants, new bonus blocks, tips, and more! Make sure to check out the website for all the info and order your copy of the book today!

On the very last day of Market, we had a surprise visit from Aurifil & Riley Blake Designer Jill Finley of Jillily Studio. We absolutely adore Jill and it was so fun to join her and Aurifil CEO Elena Gregotti for a little peek at the Aurifil booth. Keep your eyes peeled for a new collection from Jill this Fall — we can’t wait!!

Thank you so very much for following along with us. International Quilt Market was a wonderful whirlwind and we’re so grateful we got to be a part of it! Until next time!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got started in the world of sewing and quilting?
I was always a sewer, and mostly did garment and home dec sewing. Then about 20 years ago I was asked to teach a quilting class at my church. I said OK. (How hard could that be?) So, long story short—I learned a lot and then fell in love with quilting!

Meadow Weaver

Meadow Weaver in Midnight

Do you remember the process of making your first quilt and how you felt once it was complete?
It was awesome! I loved the idea of doing something old–that women had been doing for centuries. It was something that was important to keep in the tradition of things, and to use my own creativity.

Spring Fling

Spring Fling

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
I think that life in general has been an inspiration to me creatively. When I have an experience or see something beautiful, I want to create to share that.

How did you first connect with the lovely folks at Riley Blake and what have you loved most about the process of creating this latest fabric collection?
I have known many of the people a Riley Blake for many years. When I finally decided to make the move over to the Penny Rose company, it was like coming home. I love working with these people—we are on the same wave-length!

Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever

Meadow Sweets is your latest collection, available in stores now. Can you tell us a bit more about what inspired the line and what excites you most about it?
I live near the mountains and in a matter of minutes I can be up one of our beautiful canyons enjoying nature. In the spring and summer these mountain canyons are filled with colorful wildflowers—it looks like a candy store—with so many colors and textures!

Do you have a favorite project made with the collection?
Oh, I have made so many—and there are more coming, too. But one of my favorites has to be the Meadow Weaver quilt because the piecing is so unusual and intricate. And I love that it comes in 2 colorways. I can say that I LOVED piecing that, and watching it come together. The applique was so much fun to do—very simple shapes with big impact!

What is your favorite thing to make? Do you prefer quilting over creating smaller projects like home accessories or handbags, or vice versa?
I think I probably prefer quilt-making, but it sure is fun to whip up a small project like a bag or pin cushion for a change of scenery!

Strawberry Tart

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
I always tell Alex and Elena that I am their oldest US customer! The first Market that they came to—to introduce Aurifil threads to the US market, my booth was across from them. They didn’t speak much English, and I didn’t speak Italian, but we managed to get some thread to take home and try. Of course, after using it, I became a fan for life. I ran out and had to call Italy to get more because when I went back to my previous thread, I felt like I was sewing with string! At the time they didn’t have a US distributor, so it was hard to get but worth it!   I have not sewn with anything else since!

Do you have a favorite color/weight and why?
I love the 50 wt for all my piecing, by machine or by hand. I also use 50 wt. for my hand applique. On my machine I use a neutral color as I am piecing, but when I applique, I like to match the thread color to my applique piece. So, I have TONS of colors, and love them all!

I also use the 28 wt for making yo-yos, some hand stitching, etc. I have all the weights, too. You never know what you are going to need.

How did you go about selecting threads for your latest Aurifil collection?
That’s easy. I just picked colors that matched the fabrics in the collection so I can applique and top-stitch with confidence that the thread will be perfect.

Spring Market 2015 : It’s a Wrap!

The quilting industry is filled with extraordinarily creative people from a variety of backgrounds and origins.   They all come to International Quilt Market to share what they have to offer the shops and distributors but also to connect to each other.  This connection is very real since Market is sometimes the only face to face exposure the businesses, consumers and designers get to make throughout the year.  For this reason, the best part about Market is the people!  Seeing the people we talk to daily online and having the ability to chat, face to face, finding out what is important not only the customers and shops but also the designers is priceless!  The exchange of ideas for color, design, future patterns or just saying hello and giving a hug ( and sometimes a business card) is very necessary for everyone on the Market floor. Before sharing closing photographs of International Quilt Market, we would like to say thank you to all of our friends for coming by the booth, stopping us on the floor to say hello and for inviting Aurifil be a part of your experience! We appreciate you!IMG_0142Starting the photos with a quilt seems fitting and this stunning quilt displayed in the Robert Kaufman booth was quite inspiring! IMG_0205 Look at the brilliant quilting! IMG_0206 Our dear friend Jill Finley, Jillily Studio owner, Henry Glass and Aurifil thread designer was a sight for sore eyes.  We were so very happy to see her getting about on her scooter spreading love wherever she went :o)  Be sure to check out her site for some new offerings!  Jill inspires all of us to always do more and embrace the good!IMG_0026 Color inspiration could be found everywhere but this clever display in the Strokes of Brilliance booth was completely eye catching! IMG_0104 IMG_0107 In the Valori Wells booth, Valori and Man Sewing Rob Appell were exchanging ideas and having a great time! IMG_0148 Kaye England, designer for Wilmington Prints and Aurifil caught up with Alex in the booth for a quick hello before she was dashing off again with her wonderful personality and laugh! Want to watch Alex brighten up?  Have Kaye walk in the booth! IMG_0257 Robert Kaufman had a fabulous booth filled with their fantastic chambray and denim ( and a great Aurifil wall display)! There have been more garments and bags appearing in the booths at Market and it is very exciting to see a array of beautiful sewing being displayed!  Many quilters started out as garment sewers and switched gears to include the art of quilting later on in life.   IMG_0204In the Cloud Nine booth, Bag and fabric designer Anna Graham from Noodlehead, had this lovely display including the new Aurifil floss! IMG_0167 The very dynamic Tula Pink was in the Free Spirit booth with her mom looking through all the lovely new fabric collections that will be in local quilt shops soon! IMG_0252 To wrap it up and make you (hopefully) feel as if you were there with us, here is what usually happens behind the scenes with Bradley, Alex, Elena and Alexander… IMG_0145 IMG_0144 It is like taking a family photo, lol! We are already deep into planning for Fall Market in Houston and are looking forward to bring to you more inspiration, continued commitment to the best product in the marketplace and our gratitude for your support.  Thank you!
