If only we could extend International Quilt Market by a day or two… but not for the business! We need extra time to catch up with friends and colleagues — time to check in, share a hug, ask about each other’s kids/dogs/new houses/travels/parents/etc. We all work so hard and move so fast, it’s easy for the personal to get lost and sometimes the personal, the bonds formed, relationships built, and connections made are what make the biggest difference. So, for all those who we missed… ’til next time;).

Elisabeth and Nichole of Robert Kaufman fabrics took us on a fabulous tour of the RK booths, including giving us a sneak peek at their own new book, The Fussy Cut Sampler! Rebecca Bryan had a new collection presenting, as did Erin Dollar (though she didn’t have a booth this time), and we also got to visit with Darlene Zimmerman, Elizabeth Hartman, and Carolyn Friendlander and check out the booths for Valori Wells and Makenna Ryan.


We popped into Marcus to say hello to Aurifil Designers Victoria Findlay Wolfe, Nancy Rink, and Sarah Maxwell. The booths were rich with color and featured so many fabulous new patterns!


One of the biggest buzz collections of Spring Market was our trio of Limited Edition wooden boxes debuting Anna Maria Horner for Aurifil! We are so excited about these boxes that were designed to coordinate with Anna Maria’s Floral Retrospective collection and have some fun things coming up. Collections are shipping in August, so make sure to ask your local quilt shop to order yours. Anna Maria was lovely and inspiring, as always, and was kind enough to take us on the grand tour of her booth.


We were so excited to have a chance to say hello to Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson, co-authors and co-hosts of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along, which launched in 2016 as an online community sewing & quilting event and has now be released in book form, sparking a whole new wave of participants, new bonus blocks, tips, and more! On the very last day of Market, we had a surprise visit from Aurifil & Riley Blake Designer Jill Finley of Jillily Studio. We absolutely adore Jill and it was so fun to join her and Aurifil CEO Elena Gregotti for a little peek at the Aurifil booth. Keep your eyes peeled for a new collection from Jill this Fall — we can’t wait!!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got started in the world of sewing and quilting?

My love affair with quilting began in college—when I got my first apartment I didn’t have a lot of money to furnish it. My mom said I could take anything I needed from home and I found a pink dogwood applique quilt in the closet made by an aunt. It was a classic kit quilt from the 1930s. Dogwood trees were always the first sign of spring at the Lake of the Ozarks where I grew up so I knew it would be the perfect reminder of home while I was away. I used that quilt for 3 years, not understanding that it was a vintage treasure. As it began to show lots of wear and tear, I put it back in the closet always thinking I would make my own quilt someday.

Do you remember the process of making your first quilt and how you felt once it was complete?
While pregnant with my daughter, Megan, I got a serious nesting instinct and wanted to make something for her nursery. I bought an inexpensive sewing machine and a “teach yourself to quilt” book and cut out my first quilt with scissors and cardboard templates. With a full-time job and a new baby, I didn’t have much time to sew, but I kept the machine set up on a corner of our kitchen table, working a few minutes here and there. When I finally completed that baby quilt I knew I had found a life-time craft.

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
As a long-time traditional quilter who spent years making super-scrappy, intricately pieced quilts, my greatest source of inspiration for original work has been my daughters, Megan and Shannen. Like most kids, they didn’t fully understand or “get” what mom did as a quilter. They definitely didn’t appreciate the Civil War style or palette that I worked with for many years.

Once they left home, I wanted to send my quilts with them. The desire to create quilts that they would want in their own homes sparked a new creative journey for me and my entire Designs by Sarah J business. Stepping back and reassessing my entire creative process and trying new styles, new colors and new techniques has me excited about quilting all over again.

How did you first connect with Marcus and what do you love most about working with them?
I connected with Marcus initially because of my interest in Civil War reproduction fabrics and quilts. I had an idea for a book and wanted fabric that would allow me to create the quilt in my head. Stephanie Dell’Olio and Pati Violick met with me and embraced the idea of producing fabric to bring that vision to life. We spent several years collaborating on historic projects. Then, a couple of years ago, Stephanie asked me what I would create if I had no limitations. This was about the same time I had the whole epiphany that my daughters didn’t want a single one of my reproduction quilts and that the industry was changing.

So, Designs by Sarah J was born and a whole creative journey exploring brighter colors, simpler fabric designs and new techniques is underway. I still love super-scrappy quilts and intricate piecing, but I always pause after creating a new design now & think about how it could be simpler or cleaner or less fussy or what adding a few solids into the fabric mix would do to the overall design.

The best thing about working with Marcus Fabrics and their Studio 37 imprint is that they truly let me embrace my inner-ADD personality. I’ve always loved having multiple projects underway and I’ve always loved lots of fabric styles. If you could peek into my messy, chaotic, overwhelming sewing room you would find a little bit of everything and every color. Marcus lets me design cotton prints, woven plaids, batiks and they let me experiment with palettes—they don’t make me adhere to a given “look” which I would find boring and stifling.

What inspired Dandy Days?
Dandy Days is all about lazy summer days full of bright sunshine where the possibilities are endless. A gentle breeze can lift a kite in the wind or spin the blades of a pinwheel or carry a dandelion seed across the yard. I know some people view dandelions as pesky weeds—I view them as possibility—a gust of wind can result in bright pops of color everywhere.

Do you have a favorite project made with the collection? 
My favorite project from Dandy Days is currently a tie:

With Supernova. I added several solids to a limited group of prints from the collection and created a quilt with a strong graphic impact. The quilt uses large blocks—24” square so it’s also a fast finish.

With Trippy Traps, I experimented with deconstructing an English paper piecing project. I worked with Paper Pieces on an acrylic template suitable for EPP or rotary cutting and machine piecing. Because I sometimes like to see instant results, I decided to play with piecing some units & then appliquing them on a background. The quilt captures the overall statement of Dandy Days—a summer day full of color & pinwheels. It also gave me a chance to really try out the 80 wt thread and I can assure people that it’s perfect for both English paper piecing and applique.

What is your favorite thing to make? 
Large, bed-sized quilts have always been my favorite. There’s nothing like seeing something you made on your bed.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
I discovered Aurifil about 8 years ago. I was doing a lot of professional sewing for magazines and for Marcus. I was SO tired of cleaning out mountains of lint from my bobbin case and a friend suggested I try Aurifil. I bought a spool & never looked back. As I’ve expanded beyond traditional machine piecing, I love the variety of weights and the rainbow of color that allows me to create all the ideas whirling around in my head.

Do you have a favorite color/weight and why?
50 wt color 2324 is my all-time go-to for piecing. I buy the large-cones and there’s always one on a thread stand next to my machine and a backup in a drawer so I never run out while I’m staring down a deadline.

Recently, I’ve fallen in love with the 80 wt thread. My appliqué and English paper piecing stitches are invisible with this thread.

Sarah’s love of quilting stems from her college days, when her mom sent her pink dogwood quilt to grace the bed in her first apartment. The quilt was a comforting reminder of her home in the Lake of the Ozarks, where the dogwood blossoms always signaled the start of spring.

A few years later, married and expecting her first child, Sarah caught the nesting bug. Inspired by the treasured dogwood quilt, she bought a Teach Yourself to Quilt book and crafted her first quilt. She continued to improve her skills through classes at local quilt guilds, as well as learning from gifted teachers throughout the United States, fully taking advantage of modern conveniences, such as rotary cutting and computer design, as they became available.

Today, Sarah is a fabric and pattern designer for Studio 37 Fabrics, a division of Marcus Fabrics, with countless quilts to her credit. Her work has been featured regularly in both McCall’s Quilting and McCall’s Quick Quilts for the past several years. Additionally, Sarah’s quilts have appeared in Make ModernSimply Moderne,  American Patchwork & Quilting, and Quilts & More, as well as many other magazines.

QuiltCon 2017 — Savannah, GA

We’re just getting back and settled in from a spectacular five days in beautiful, historic, and fascinating Savannah, Georgia.  There is a certain perceived expectation when you think of “The South”, particularly when you think of Savannah.  Nothing about this city disappointed me. Not even the weather- especially because I arrived the day after it stopped raining. What luck!

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and one of the only surviving cities left after the Civil War.  Some of the houses date back to the 1700s, which is pretty incredible.


Just imagine the quilts that were made inside those walls!  That certainly brings a whole new level of appreciation for Civil War reproduction fabrics, don’t you think?

Savannah is a very picturesque city, full of manicured lawns, immaculately kept homes and ornate details everywhere you look.  Just walking a few blocks to breakfast took us nearly an hour because we kept stopping to admire the view, take pictures or read the plaques of the various fountains and statues in the squares.

The Savannah River divides the city from the World Trade Center, where QuiltCon 2017 was held.  There was only one hotel on that side, and if you weren’t staying in it, you had to travel across the river via ferry.  On the first night, the ferry was packed full of quilters and only a few locals.  I doubt they had ever seen so many handmade bags and quilt related t-shirts in one place before!


We had a great time playing a game with our QuiltCon guests.  The idea was to see who, amongst the three players, could put a puzzle together the fastest.  The fastest got to take home a large spool of thread of their choice; the remaining two took home a small spool of their choice.  Everyone was a winner!

All players were challenged to beat the ‘best time’, which kept getting faster and faster throughout the event. On Sunday morning, we had our fastest participant EVER, not just for QuiltCon. Karen Brown completed the Aurifil Spool puzzle in just 2 minutes & 36 seconds. We were all in awe! Congratulations again to Karen, who is now the excited recipient of a Tula Pink Ultimate Collection — 45 small spools of lucious and colorful thread!

To help celebrate 270 Colors, the incredible quilt by Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill of Whole Circle Studio, we hosted an ongoing social media contest.  Participants had to take a “Selfie” in front of the quilt and post it to Instagram using the hashtag “#270ColorsGiveaway“.  We had over 190 entries and our winners were:

We did also share a daily at-home giveaway so that no one would be excluded!! Thank you again to all who played along!

Even though we weren’t able to sell our thread in our booth, there was still plenty to be found throughout the show including the booths for: Craft South, Crimson Tate, Andover, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, Marcus FabricsRiley Blake, and more!!

We also loved having a chance to visit with some of our amazing fabric partners. Many of them had interactive booths, giving visitors a chance to design quilt blocks, collect supplies to work on collaborative quilting projects, and more!

Of course, one of my favorite aspects of community events like this, is all of the quilts.  I’m amazed at the diversity on display.  Just when I think I’ve seen it all, when I’ve defined my own personal style, I turn a corner and see something that changes my whole perspective, something that makes me stop and think and admire.  Below are some of my favorites from this year’s show.

And of course, Best In Show, “Bling” by Katherine Jones:



I’m pretty sure she said it took her over 160 hours to complete the quilt top.  It is ENTIRELY paper-pieced!  Can you imagine??

All-in-all, a great time was had by all.  People left feeling inspired, satisfied, knowledgable.  I think those are the best things to come away with.  And, even though it’s maybe a little sad to leave and go back home to reality, the memories live on and we get to look forward to the next time we can fill our minds with new techniques and skills. We get to fill our hearts with the fun times had with friends that we may have only previous known online.  That’s the beauty of it, really.

Getting to Know Hue by Nancy Rink


We are incredibly thrilled to introduce Nancy Rink of Nancy Rink Designs, our newest Aurifil Designer. Getting to Know Hue is her latest collection with Marcus Fabrics. Nancy’s goal was to craft a collection that featured small motifs in a variety of blendable colors. In approaching the color palette, she pulled out her collection of Kaffe Fassett prints, because she is always on the lookout for blenders that work with his prints. In the end, the group was narrowed down to 28 colors, 9 neutrals, and two 60″ wide multi-prints. Everything you could possibly need to make a stunning quilt!

But Nancy didn’t stop there… she reached out to us to put together a coordinating thread collection. A Large box of 50wt threads and a small box of 28wt thread – Nancy’s go-tos for piecing, quilting, and appliqué.

And then… She made a GORGEOUS quilt and turned it into a BOM, currently being offered by your favorite local quilt shop! My goodness we’re feeling inspired!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got started in the world of sewing and quilting?
I live in Bakersfield, which is in the central valley of California. Many people know Bakersfield because it is the home of “the Bakersfield Sound” a gritty, twangy, honky-tonk country music style made popular by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.  NASCAR driver, Kevin Harvick hails from Bakersfield—in fact, he was one of my junior high students back in the day!


My grandmother taught me to sew when I was little. For many years I only did garment sewing, and while I was in college I made and altered a lot of costumes for the university’s theater productions.

In 2010 I began designing patterns to feature Marcus Fabric’s new collections. In 2011, Amish With A Twist, my first Marcus BOM debuted in my first ever Quilt Market booth. Geez, was I nervous about it, wondering if anyone would like it enough to buy the pattern.  Apparently, the folks at Marcus were happy because they invited back to do Amish with a Twist II and Amish with a Twist III. Lately, I’ve had a few customers asking me when Amish IV would be coming out!

Since then, I have designed roughly one BOM each year for Marcus Fabrics. In 2012, “Tweet for Two”, my first fabric collection hit the shelves. That was definitely a “pinch me” moment.

Did you have another career prior to this one?
I taught Junior High and High School English and Math for over 20 years.

Do you remember the process of making your first quilt and how you felt once it was complete?
What inspired me to start quilting was an article in a magazine that I purchased while checking out at the grocery store. I read it and thought “I can do that!” Up to that point I had done a lot of garment sewing and just figured if I could set in a sleeve or line a jacket, I should be able to make a quilt. That first quilt had a lot of 5/8” seams! Also, I used an old sheet as the backing.  Needless to say, hand quilting it was a bear, and my stitches were huge! There are so, so many things wrong with that quilt—but ignorance was bliss. Somewhere along the way, I checked out a book from the library on how to quilt. What an epiphany!

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
Inspiration seems to be everywhere and thanks to the internet we can see more quilts than ever. I    personally spend far too much time on Instagram looking at art that people are making. But perhaps the tool that transformed me from maker to designer is Electric Quilt. Early on, I got on board with EQ, spending hours “making” quilts. When I am designing a fabric collection I work back and forth between Photoshop and EQ, tweaking my fabrics until they look just right in the EQ quilt I’ve designed to accompany the collection.

Can you tell us a bit more about Getting to know Hue and what inspired the collection?
Getting to Know Hue is my newest fabric collection for Marcus Fabrics’ Studio 37 division. It is a basics collection of tonal prints in 28 colors, 9 neutrals, and two 60″-wide prints. When developing the color palette for the collection, I referred to my collection of Kaffe Fassett prints and florals because I wanted some tonals that I could use with them.  Also important was making sure there was a light, medium, and dark in each color I chose. Here are some swatches from GTKH on the right with some of Kaffe’s swatches on the left. I cannot wait to have time to play with all of these!

We absolutely love the Getting to know Hue quilt — how did you go about pulling that together for the BOM and what excites you most about the program?
When I was developing the GTKH fabric collection I knew I was going to also be designing a BOM to go with it. That was where Electric Quilt proved invaluable.  My initial set of swatches numbered well over 50.  I imported all of them into EQ and through trial and error was able to trim the collection down to a reasonable number of pieces. It’s also worth noting that my first BOM concept was NOTHING like the final quilt. What excites me most about the program is that there are so many options. There are three different background options: light, medium, and dark. And there are three different center star options: lone star, Improv star, and Strippy Star.

Do you have other favorite projects that have been made with the collection?
Currently, I am working on three different quilts using a 2 1/2″-wide strip pack that will preview at Spring Quilt Market in the Studio 37 booth. The strip pack will consist of 20 prints from the GTKH collection, and all three of the quilts will be available in a single pattern called “Strip It Three Ways: Series 4”.

What is your favorite quilting technique and why?
Appliqué is my absolute favorite! If I had all the time in the world, I would do nothing but hand applique’. Since that’s not the case, I do a lot of machine applique’ and have gotten pretty adept at both prepared edge machine applique’ and raw edge applique’. GTKH features a touch of applique which I edge finished with Aurifil 28 wt thread.  All the thread colors I used on my quilt are included in my new Aurifil GTKH 28 wt thread set.

By the way, all the quilting was done with colors from the GTKH 50wt thread box.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
I have been using Aurifil thread for quite a long while now, and have been singing its praises to anyone who will listen.  I love that the 50wt thread is strong enough to use on my longarm and fine enough to be used for hand appliqué. To me it is the finest all around thread on the market, hands down.  The fact that it is an incredibly low-lint thread is an added plus.


Do you have a favorite color/weight and why?
Numbers 2000, 2014, and 2600 have been my go-to colors for piecing for years. Recently, I have been using a lot of 6725 and 6730. For machine quilting I’ve found that 2130, a soft yellow, 2886, a pistachio green, and 2310, a neutral beige are my go-to colors for all over quilting.

What’s in store for 2017? Where can we find you this year?
In addition to “Getting to Know Hue”, I have another fabric collection called “Remember Red” in the works. Red is my favorite color so I am eager for this line to come out–hopefully in time so I can show samples in the Studio 37 booth at Spring Quilt Market. I am also already hard at work on my 2018 BOM–yes, it takes that long–about a year from start to finish to bring a BOM to life.

Because my husband Oliver retired and our daughter just had our first grandchild, this year I am staying close to home.  I am visiting a few guilds for trunk shows and workshops, but for the most part, I’ll be in my studio creating or at home enjoying the grandbaby.

nancy-rink-photo-osIn April 2004 Nancy was the featured artist at the Best of the Valley Quilt Show in Tulare, California. Bobbie Moore, the show’s organizer was quoted in the Bakersfield Californian, saying “Rink’s work is especially unusual. She’s an appliqué artist and her stitches are almost invisible, they’re exquisite. She makes beautiful use of color and motion in her work.”

Nancy has won several awards for her quilting. At the 2004 Houston International Quilt Festival, Remembrance of Nanny and Desert Star were both given Honorable Mentions. Also in 2004, Dogtooth Violets earned one of the top awards in the Kaufman Quilt Quest. Most recently, Emerald Spring won a first place in Mixed Techniques at Road to California. She has won awards at other national shows including the Pacific International Quilt Festival, the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza, the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, and the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show. And Desert Star, the first place winner in the 2002 From the Mills Contest, was on display at the American Textile History Museum.

Nancy’s quilts have been featured in magazines such as Quilter’s Newsletter MagazineQuiltmaker, and Quilt. Other quilts have appeared in calendars and books and on websites. “Quilting has been an incredible journey,” says Nancy, “and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!” (more here)

Having grown up on a farm in Minnesota, what inspired you to shift gears and move to New York City?  
I always knew I’d be an artist, and figured I’d live in a  big city. The minute I graduated, I moved to Minneapolis, then that wasn’t big enough, and later went to NYC.  I was always told if you were an artist, New York was the place to be. I followed my dream since I was 5 years old.

How did you first discover and come to love this wonderful world of textiles?  
Growing up on a farm we grew and made everything. My mother was a seamstress and my father was an upholsterer besides being a farmer. My grandmother was the quilter,

Sewing was like eating, breathing and sleeping… Being an artsy kid, you could not stop me from creating with wood, fiber, twigs, wire… whatever I could get my hands on.  It wasn’t until I was becoming a mother that I got  drawn to making quilts.  As one does on the farm, when someone is having a baby, you make them a quilt… And so my quilting journey began, It was easier to work in fiber instead of oil paint when my daughter was little. The obsession caught on quite quickly.

I do find that I paint the same way I build a quilt.  If I had a canvas on my right and design wall on my left, I’d brush some red paint on the canvas, and lay on a piece of red fabric on the design wall… If I wanted to change it, I could easily do that on either surface. I do all my designing on the wall, not on paper. I need to see it in front to fly with all my fabric options…

Do you remember the process of creating your first quilt and how you felt once it was finished?
As a child, I was obsessed with “making.”  This means, making ANYTHING. I was either sewing, coloring, or building… it never stopped. My first “quilt” was 2″ thick, because I used my father’s raw cotton upholstery batting. I tried to hand quilt it with a small needle — I think I got one stitch per inch,  besides loosing the needle in a 2″ quilt. It was very frustrating as you can imagine!  I still have it — I found it a two years ago, along with a quilt top that I abandoned, because it was all crooked and wonky. It’s very funny now, when I love improv. I guess I was ahead of my time and didn’t know it — haha.


What do you love most about quilting?
Building and finishing a quilt is like making a complete thought. It has a beginning , a middle and an end. Those final stitches on the binding are the most satisfying to me, as I am already creating the next quilt in my head at that time.

You have a number of wonderful industry partners, including Marcus Fabric, Sizzix, Juki and of course, Aurifil. What do you love most about working collaboratively in this industry and how does it help to shape your experience?
I’m a creature of “if it isn’t broke don’t fix it.” When I find a product I love, I don’t waiver. I use what works, and helps get me to my end game, the finished product. I love having options around me, but many different options can overwhelm me, so I stick with what I know I love to use, and gives me the best results I am looking for.

Meadow Storm is your latest collection with Marcus Fabrics. Can you tell us a bit about how the collection came to be and what inspired these new designs?
Growing up in Minnesota I learned from a young age that conversations revolve around the weather, and how is your garden is growing… People love to talk about Minnesota weather, most certainly winter!  I grew up pulling weeds and canning vegetables with my mother, so as I grew up, I found that I still love to garden. This idea of gardening and weather, inspired my collection of Meadow Storm.  
Designs such as Cloudy, Misty, Overcast, and Sunshowers suggest the amazing displays in a prairie sky. Combining timeless elements with a graphic approach to create a fresh and modern Storm of inspiration to cut up and piece together, just like the garden paths.

And my next line, called “LIGHT WORK” will be in stores in February!

Do you have a favorite project that was made with the new fabrics?
My Cross & Crown quilt is definitely a favorite, I used my black-and-white awning stripe, cut in different ways to create great visual effect. Dropping in other fabrics from the collection to great a modern scrappy looking quilt.

How did you go about selecting threads for your latest Aurifil collection?
Depending on my project, I’m looking to match my threads to the quilt, and I always include a variegated thread.



Do you have a favorite Aurifil thread?
YES!  If I’m piecing I love the variegated thread #4651 as it blends from white, yellow, and pink, to lavender. When I’m making scrappy quilts, I like to have the thread color change as well, so that the thread is never visible on the top.  This thread is available in my Mostly Manor Collection.


My thread sets are selected to go wth my fabric lines, and to add colors to your thread library.  Having options I find is the best.  Having the smaller sets of thread help me add to my stash in an affordable way.
