The High Voltage Collection by Rob Appell

rob-thread-wall

Textile artist and designer Rob Appell got his start in the quilting and sewing industry years ago when he landed a job in his Mother’s Quilt Shop, “The Cotton Ball” in Morro Bay, California. He worked as a sewing machine technician and was quickly drawn to the world of quilting. He learned by trial and error and brings a masculine touch to this age old tradition. The man in Man Sewing, Rob now brings an energy and enthusiasm to the business through his terrific YouTube tutorials. He is a longtime user and supporter of Aurifil, singing praises of quality, variety and versatility far and wide.

We were so thrilled to partner with Rob on The High Voltage Collection. Rob assembled 12 of his absolute favorite, can’t-live-without-them, use-them-day-after-day colors in his go-to 40wt.

THE INTERVIEW
How did you first get started in the quilting industry?

My mother had purchased a well established quilt shop while I was in college. I came home and ended helping out around the shop while working nights in the restaurant business. So glad to have found this path.

screen-shot-2016-09-09-at-10-55-24-pm

Do you remember the process of creating your first quilt and how you felt once it was finished?
I do, I was so excited to do my free motion machine quilting. That was why I made the quilt top, so super excited to give the FMQ a try. I was hooked in just a few stitches. I look back at those first stitches and just laugh at how poor they were, but I was having fun then, and still am now.

How did you first connect with the Missouri Star Quilt Co.?
I was asked if I would like to try to make tutorials like Jenny Doan was doing. They did approach me with a job offer that quickly became an adoption into their fabulous family. Great people to work and create with!

Who or what has been your greatest creative inspiration?
The past two years have been the best years of my creative journey. Everyday I wake more excited than the day before. I feel so blessed to have the job that I have and to get to inspire people with my quilting and sewing. I pull from nature, friends and family, humor, to state a few when being inspired, but at this point the feeling of success in my studio is more motivating than anything I have experienced before.

And the Flag Was Still There by Rob Appell

What do you love most about connecting with others via your show, Man Sewing?
I love that I get to be creative and create a wide variety of sewing and quilting related projects. The YouTube audience is so broad that I can enjoy presenting the craziest projects in the simplest of ways.

On the set of Man Sewing

On the set of Man Sewing

Do you have a technique that you favor?
I was very into fusible applique to create landscape quilts, but as I improve on my piecing I am enjoying doing more patchwork. The Applique quilts almost dictate the free motion process, where the patchwork quilts push me as a machine quilter too. I must try to be creative with the style, but it all shows up so much more.

When did you first discover Aurifil threads and what do you love most about them?
I use to sell the threads in my Mom’s quilt shop – everyone said it was the best. Then I met Alex while I displaying my Endangered Species Quilts, his booth was across from my quilts and we hit it off.

Do you have a favorite weight/color?
I love the 40 wt as I do so much machine quilting. My favorite color is green, but to pick just one spool would not be fair.

the_high_voltage_collection_1200x628

How did you go about selecting colors for this collection?
I took the whole color card and put a highlighter on my favorite colors. Then I had to go through and pick just the best. I wanted the collection to be able to work with just about anything from my personal stash. So far so good, I love having the different color families to choose from, and of course the stuff quilts like a dream.

first quilt

When was your FIRST quilt sighting? Did it inspire you to start quilting? If not, what did?

I have always loved quilts, thread and textiles since childhood, so it’s impossible to remember which one came first.  My granny taught me to crochet when I was five and I have always loved granny squares.  I had always dreamed of learning to quilt and made it come true once I was out of college.  The first quilt I ever made was a blue and yellow log cabin.  I’ve learned so much since then, but it still has a special place in my heart.  I handquilted it and the stitches leave a lot to be desired.

castle couryard pattern banner

When you go to a quilt show, what types of quilts are you drawn to?

I am drawn to vintage-y quilts of all kinds, pre-Civil War quilts and feedsack quilts especially.  Oh, and Amish quilts too!  They have a certain simplicity that I’m drawn too.  It could just be simple sawtooth stars or Irish Chains, but that back-to-the-basics simplicity is my true quilt love.

IMG_1292

Did you have a career prior to making art, and what was it?

I was a CPA before quilts became my profession.  I do employ that knowledge to run my businesses (Fat Quarter Shop and It’s Sew Emma), but this is so much more fulfilling.

hey cupcake

What is your favorite place to visit in your hometown?

The Hey Cupcake! trailer is a mainstay for me and my kids, and we have a weekly family dinner at El Gallo, which I’ve been going to since I was a child.  My husband Kevin and I like to go to UT games during football season(Go Longhorns!).

1658418_10152550638323358_8653258069035746312_o

What does your studio look like, and what would you change in it?

My studio is actually getting a makeover right now, so I don’t have any photos, but MAN I’m going to be so organized!  That means lots of shelving and using up previously unused space.

It also doubles as my home office, so I also have a computer and TV in there. (tshirts here)

designboard

Do you have a GREAT storage, organization, or label making tip?

I store all of my fabrics in wire baskets similar to this.  I also have a handy cart from IKEA for my UFOs.  I like having my UFOs out in the open so there is more motivation to finish my projects.

My good friend Lori Holt taught me how to make her design boards (tutorial: here) which I use to hold my fabrics in place while I plan my quilts.

labels

Then of course, Alphabitties are my cute way of labeling fabrics as I cut

Fav Spools

What are your 3 favorite colors of Aurifil thread?

2000 (http://www.fatquartershop.com/aurifil-beige-100-cotton-mako-spool-thread) and 2610 (http://www.fatquartershop.com/aurifil-gray-100-cotton-mako-spool-thread) are my favorite colors to piece with.  I’ve started using the Invisible Monofilament thread to quilt, too! Anything else you’d like to share?

I know you, Pat, are already sewing with us, but I can’t urge everyone enough to sew the Snapshots quilt with us!  This is a free quilt-along program we’re offering that benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

We’re also finishing up Lori Holt’s next book, Farm Girl Vintage (http://www.itssewemma.com/farm-girl-vintage-book), that releases in April.

Aurifil Mini 3

What about your Month Inspired your Quilt Block?

After sewing my Snapshots quilt, I wanted to use up my leftover Daysail scraps.  Bonnie and Camille fabric always makes my heart go pitter-patter, no matter how much I’ve sewn with it already!  Going along with my love of simple blocks, my mini is made with simple half-square triangles and flying geese.  Each ring gets to show off its own color, and the slightly off-centeredness makes it feel fresh.  I hope you love it!
