Meadow Dance

Meadow Dance is a wonderful new collection by Aurifil Designer Amanda Murphy for Contempo/Benartex. The collection features a lovely range of colors to choose from including soft aqua with cool accents of red and green, lilac, and blue. Large scale and richly colored florals are offset by smaller scale prints and textures. Amanda has also included a learning panel designed for rulerwork on domestic or longarm machines. We can’t wait to see what you all make with this collection!!

Modern Marks Blog Hop

Modern Marks

Today we are very excited to be a part of Christa Watson’s Modern Marks Blog Hop! Christa is one of our cherished Aurifil Designers, and we are thrilled that she released her debut fabric line with Benartex Fabrics at Fall Quilt Market! Thank you to our Social Media Coordinator, Hilary Jordan, for stitching up a quilt for the blog hop. ❤

Modern Marks features a wonderful assortment of colors and prints. They play together very well, but can also be fantastic basics in your stash. I chose to make the Cobblestone quilt, a pattern by Fat Quarter Shop. It is a quilt pattern I’ve made previously, and I knew it would stitch up quickly and beautifully! A must for sewing around the holidays.

Quilt

Making this quilt was my first time working with fabrics by Benartex. They are incredibly smooth, have minimal fraying, and the colors are absolutely vibrant! My goal was to make sure no two of the same color values were touching. A great way to check this is to snap a picture of your blocks and edit the picture to black and white. You’ll be able to see the contrast and adjust accordingly prior to stitching the blocks together.

Quilt Full

For the quilting I did a “Waving Grid”, it is by far one of my favorite walking foot techniques that I learned from Christa during a workshop she hosted for the Houston Modern Quilt Guild. It is more forgiving than straight line quilting, and it stitches up fast!

When it came time to select a thread for quilting, the mix of prints gave me the perfect opportunity to use Aurifil #3817 Marrakesh. The variegated thread features yellows, reds, blues, and greens that complemented the fabrics wonderfully.

GIVEAWAY!!!

We are super excited to offer up a fab giveaway, courtesy of Christa, Benartex, and yours truly 😉 . One lucky winner will receive 8-10 Modern Marks FQs from the prints in the photo + the Piece and Quilt Collection Colors by Christa Watson. To enter to win, click here to head to the Rafflecopter entry page or simply click on the image above. This year we are celebrating the rainbow of colors in our color wheel. Each designer is assigned a color to create their block in.

This month we land on Green. Each month it’s a wonderful surprise to see how the designer was inspired by their color on the colorwheel.

I’m a huge fan of Heather’s work. She has vibrant work and super clever designs!

I interviewed Heather and you can listen to that at my website

This year we challenged each designer by giving them a color on the color wheel. I asked for a photo to use in the collage so we can see how each one worked.  In January I’ll have a setting to pull them all together!

Geode Quilt Along by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts

Geode QAL with BlossomHeartQuilts

Today we are excited to share the Geode Quilt Along hosted by Aurifil Artisan Alyce Blyth of Blossom Heart Quilts! The Geode quilt is a stunning project that can be made in four different sizes: Baby, Throw, Queen, & King.

This week, the QAL is all about choosing fabrics for your version of the quilt and of course that means choosing the perfect Aurifil thread to go alongside those fabrics. 😉

Selecting Aurifil thread to match Tula Pink fabrics

We adore the Tula Pink fabrics and Aurifil threads that Alyce has chosen for her baby version of the Geode quilt. She will be playing around with some fun free motion quilting, so she selected threads that coordinate well with each of the different prints.

Alyce was kind enough to send us the Geode pattern, and we stitched up a block using Valori Wells fabric combined with Robert Kaufman Essex Linen. We’re looking forward to piecing more blocks in this monochrome blue theme. Piecing was done using Aurifil #4140 Wedgewood, and will be quilted with variegated 40wt #4655 Storm at Sea.

Geode Quilt Block

Head over to Blossom Heart Quilts to learn more about Alyce’s fabric recommendations for the quilt and to enter to win in an amazing giveaway sponsored by us! 😉

Alyce Blyth

Fueled by lattes, Alyce loves designing, making, teaching, snuggling, and giving quilts (except making binding, she doesn’t like that). She is inspired by her family, her surroundings, and of course the pretty fabric, to quilt according to her motto: create what you love, with love, to love.

Rulerwork Zippered Bag by Amanda Murphy

Happy Friday! Today, we’re thrilled to hand Auribuzz over to Aurifil Designer Amanda Murphy. We presented Amanda’s debut Aurifil thread collections, Piecing and Quilting  and Appliqué, last year and we always love seeing all of the fabulous things that she creates with them! Welcome, Amanda!

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hey everyone! My name is Amanda Murphy and I’m a Benartex fabric designer, author with C&T Publishing, pattern designer, and BERNINA Quilting and Longarm Spokesperson. Recently I designed a free pattern for BERNINA for a Rulerwork Zippered Bag and, since it features Aurifil threads, I thought I’d come over here and share it with you!

BERNINA Zippered Rulerwork Bag, featuring Nordic Holiday, by Amanda Murphy for Contempo Studios of Benartex

For this pattern I used took advantage of the new BERNINA #72 adjustable ruler foot (although you can use a walking foot too). For those of you who haven’t discovered this wonderful tool yet, it can make hard-to-quilt things like smooth curves and circles MUCH easier – plus it virtually eliminates the need to rotate your quilt top!

Usually I quilt with Aurifil 50wt thread, but for the bags, I really wanted the ruler work to pop, so I chose to use contrasting 28wt Aurifil threads from my Appliqué Collection for the rulerwork and then fill in with a 50 wt. Aurifil that matched the fabric.

Detail of the quilting in Aurifiil 28 wt. and 50 wt. threads

What is your favorite color Aurifil thread? I’m really partial to 5005 and 5006 at the moment, but there are so many lovely shades.

You can download PDF directions and see videos of the ruler work here.

If you make a bag, show us what you’ve done! Post on Instagram tagging @amandamurphydesign and the hashtags #aurifil and #weallsew!

For more free-motion quilting ideas feel free to join me on my Facebook Group and happy bag-making!

Amanda and her BERNINA Q24

Amanda and her BERNINA Q24

Always attracted to color, texture, and pattern, Amanda Murphy has been designing, drawing, and sewing since she was a child. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a bachelor of fine arts degree and worked as a graphic designer and art director in Alexandria, Virginia, and New York City. After moving to North Carolina with her family Amanda discovered quilting, an art that marries her passion for design with her enthusiasm for handwork. As she gradually expanded her knowledge of sewing and quilting techniques and combined them with the ideas she had been sketching over the years, Amanda Murphy Design was born.

Amanda markets her own full-color pattern line under the Amanda Murphy Design label and has designed several fabric collections.  Her fourth collection with Benartex will debut in Summer 2016.
